Your Guide to Better Sex Books
For writers, there’s nothing like getting pumped up to start a new book. There’s that zing that whips through you as you’re hashing out this character or that. Not to mention the zip one gets in watching the characteristics of a hero or heroine evolve in one’s mind and then on to paper. Usually, when I start a new book, I’ve got a pretty good idea as to what direction I want to take with my story. But sometimes it doesn’t work that way, particularly if I’m on a deadline. Deadlines are a plus or minus for me, sometimes they’re great motivation and at other times they create so much stress the DH tells me to stop writing. Umm, as IF!Now some of the pressure that comes when writing a book involves resolving characterization issues and developing small incidents that illustrate the character’s vulnerabilities to the reader as well as the H/H. The fact that I’m dealing with an Ogre who’s like an onion, there are layers to peel back. (Thank you Shrek for that terrific, succinct characterization tip) This probably sounds like a simple issue to some, but others will empathize with my angst when I’m writing a book and I’m the trouble I sometimes have figuring out those small incidents to show character development.Part of the problem for me is that I work a day job, so my ability to have a long, consistent piece of writing time isn’t possible until the weekend. So during the week, I have sporadic writing times depending on what time I wake up and what time I go to bed. Of late, I’ll go to bed at 9pm or so and wind up waking up at 3am panicked about the book. So I’ll go write for a couple of hours before exhaustion sets in and I go back to bed until I’m forced to crawl out of bed at 7:30am. This DOES NOT make for writing that’s pristine. In fact, I wind up revising extensively, which ordinarly I don’t HAVE to do.So you can imagine how frustrating it must be for me when moments of inspiration hit at inopportune times. And by inspiration, I’m talking about those brilliant resolutions that are so fleeting that they’re like lightning bugs on a hot summer evening. They blink on then blink off. I mean I can sit in front of a computer screen for an hour and not come up with one brilliant thought, but the minute I step into the shower or sit behind the wheel of my Ford Escape I’m slammed with ideas. I’ve even considered looking for idea board that I can write on in the shower without the ink running. Even worse is when I’m driving home in traffic, trying to jot down notes on the little notebook in my catch-all tray is difficult while driving. Oy!
